Trading Advice

If you need help and advice and are NOT a West Yorkshire based business contact your locally based Trading Standards or Consumer Protection Service

Initial Advice to Businesses

In our enforcement policy West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service commits to ensuring that businesses:

  • Clearly understand the legislative requirements relating to their business;
  • Can access advice about how to meet those requirements.

We recognise that in the current economic climate that legitimate businesses are finding it difficult enough to keep trading without Trading Standards imposing further burdens. That is why we have a policy of 'no intervention without a reason'. We are here to help and provide assistance but will not hinder honest businesses. At the same time the activity of rogue traders harms consumers and honest traders struggling to stay afloat so we will take action to stop their activity.

Targeted Advice

Consumer DirectWe have introduced the Newsflash system a free email newsletter where you select the type of content you want to receive. So if you sell food, non food or provide a service; manufacture or import or just want to keep up to date with relevant changes, why not sign up? Simply click on the Newsflash logo to go to the registration page. Once there, just tick the subject areas you are interested in and you will receive information that is relevant to your needs.

Advice to business is available in guidance material on Government Department and Agencies or other organisations’ web-sites. As a starting point the ERWIN website contains a wealth of guidance and information for businesses.

For advice on consumer rights your customers may have when returning goods please see the Office of Fair Trading website pages.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards also has a small range of guidance notes where the areas covered are not commonly dealt with elsewhere. Our Consumer Law guidance will also be of use to retail businesses. Businesses who sell age restricted products may find our Responsible Retailer (Underage Sales) guidance pack helpful.
